About

Black Everlasting is a design brand centered on bark fiber craftsmanship. The four-member team—Wang Ya-Lan, Yen Pei-Yan, Lauzu Ruruan, and Liao Hsiao-Jung—are all from Pingtung and are deeply rooted in the Paiwan and Rukai cultures.
We believe that culture is alive and ever-flowing. Only through daily practice and continuity can it naturally become part of our lives. By rethinking our relationship with the land, we have come to realize that the essence of living culture begins with how we gather from nature and put its gifts to use.
On this land—both familiar and unfamiliar—we came to rediscover the paper mulberry, a plant once used by our ancestors to make cloth, yet now often regarded as useless. Choosing to reclaim this ancient wisdom, we work through the gathering of bark, followed by design and making, allowing it to find new value once again. Transformed into furniture, lighting, and other home pieces, this traditional craft is woven into contemporary life in a sustainable way.

Design Team

The origin of the brand began with a renewed reflection on culture. In the past, our work focused mainly on event visuals and spatial design, often centered on Indigenous cultures. Over time, however, we realized that such expressions frequently remained at the level of motifs and symbols, overlooking the true spirit of culture itself. Without relying on patterns, colors, or traditional objects, how can the essence of culture be conveyed? This question led us back to the land. We began learning by observing and following the ways of our elders—gathering, laboring, and creating—practicing these acts step by step in everyday life. Founding this brand was not simply about producing crafts, but about rebuilding our connection with the land through creation and making.

Brand Founder

Hailing from Pingtung and of Paiwan heritage, grew up in Taipei. In 2013, a research project for graduate school brought them back to their ancestral village, marking a profound turning point in their life. Upon returning, they apprenticed with elders to learn cultural practices and worked alongside local artisans to study motif carving. Through this process, they came to understand that "craft is a life skill" and rediscovered the deeper meaning of everyday life, inspiring their decision to return home and embrace the village way of living. With over a decade of experience in brand management, marketing, and visual design, they have spent twelve years deeply cultivating their hometown and actively promoting the Indigenous craft industry in Pingtung. They possess extensive experience in curating exhibitions and developing marketing strategies, helping local craft studios establish brand positioning and outreach initiatives, and have organized numerous Indigenous cultural and art exhibitions. In recent years, they founded the craft design brand Black Everlasting, combining contemporary design language with traditional techniques. Through their creations, they aim to breathe new life into craft, continue cultural legacies, and create contemporary craft value.

"Black" represents the cultures of the Paiwan and Rukai peoples; "Everlasting" symbolizes the beauty of culture that can be passed down through generations; and Lumamiling means "eternity" in the Rukai language. We hope to use the land’s timeline as a lens to see the fleeting beauty of every life upon it. Guided by the legacy of our elders, we cultivate life through labor, leaving stories and imprints for the next generation.
